Giving the product a new angle, adidas relaunch the GMR chip with a few updates to the technology, enabling it to be used in both a performance tracking and gaming aspect. And the Three Stripes have recruited Joao Felix as the face of this renewed GMR.
Earlier this year, adidas launched the GMR chip, giving users the ability to measure passes, shot power, distance and speed on-pitch, to unlock exclusive in-game rewards on FIFA, to improve their Team OVR and compete in leaderboards. But now its usage has been extended, so rather than just being compatible in FIFA mobile, the GMR tag and insole is now able to analyse users performance on the field and wirelessly sync stats to the GMR App, showcasing shot power, sprints, kicks, and distance. This means that whilst users are still able to compare their performance with the best and average users on a daily basis, GMR is also helpful to those who want to continue to train on their own – particularly helpful given the recent lockdown and the postponement of grass roots football.
Further to this, Joao Felix is challenging fans around the world to put their football skills to the test and compete against him in the Prove It with GMR shot power challenge – a new challenge that turns real-life action into virtual rewards. Wearing the GMR insole, fans must showcase their skill and flair by kicking the ball in the air and being creative before volleying the ball towards goal as hard as possible.
A global leaderboard will rank each attempt, with the top 20 players and their scores posted on adidas Instagram highlights at the end of each day. Fans are encouraged to post their efforts on social media using #GMR for a chance to feature across adidas social channels. FIFA Mobile prizes will be offered to everyone who takes part over the next two weeks and bigger rewards for those that finish in the top 20 overall.
adidas GMR is available to purchase online at adidas.com/gmr and in select adidas stores. FIFA Mobile is available to download in the App Store (iOS) and Google Play Store (Android) and enables players to connect directly to adidas GMR.
