We pick out our favourite Spain World Cups kits
With less than 50 days until the 2014 World Cup in Brazil we're counting down to kick off by picking out our top 5 World Cup shirts from different nations. We've already chosen our favourite Brazil strips of years gone by and now it's time for the holders - Spain. From 5 to 1 here's our pick of the best La Roja World Cup jerseys.
5 | Italy 1990
The Spanish national team kits have predominantly been supplied by adidas throughout the years but in 1990 that trend was broken by Le coq sportif and they didn't disappoint. A classic red jersey was complimented with a yellow trimmed v-neck and collar to create an all round retrolicious piece of clobber.
4 | France 1998
A typically and brilliantly tacky 90's design landed for France '98. Not quite as brilliantly tacky as the 1994 kit (more on that later) but this is a proper kit in our eyes. Before the days of standard templates and when the whole kit was produced in extra large. Old school at it's very best. Not a tournament to remember for Spain as they crashed out in the group stage finishing below Nigeria and Paraguay.
3 | South Africa 2010
The most famous Spain kit of all time. The kit in which they won their first ever World Cup will go down in history as their most iconic. Spain actually played the World Cup Final in their away kit but changed into the home strip at full time to ensure the famous red would feature on every newspaper and TV channel in the world. World Cup or not, it would have sneaked into our top 5 anyway, clean, tidy with just enough details to keep it interesting.
2 | USA 1994
Much like the France '98 kit the USA '94 strip captured that unique 90's design perfectly. A time when each country had their own sense of identity, no templates, no boring designs, just a bunch of Spanish designers, a crate of Estrella and a free license to go to town on the drawing board. Covered in shiny diamonds and a collar you can wear up. Classic 90's.
1 | Spain 1982
As much as we love the eccentric designs it's the 1982 kit that takes the gold for us. Spain were knocked out in the second round but the adidas kit for the tournament in their own back yard was a beaut. There's something about that old school adidas logo we love. Now reserved for the Originals collection that logo sat on a traditional red jersey that was finished off with three yellow stripes along the shoulders and a large loose collar. The only thing wrong with it? It's not on our desk.
