Building on the “Trash Transformed” mantra that signifies the brand’s journey toward a zero carbon and zero waste future, Nike launch the Chelsea 21/22 home shirt. Plastic bottles never did London prouder…

Chelsea is on the cusp of an exciting new chapter, and it’s one that starts this weekend with the FA Cup final, before moving on to the grandest club stage of them all with the Champions League final on 29 May. It’s a new chapter that’s characterised by the youth and energy of the current squad; a dynamic group of young players that are energising the club on pitch and connecting to a younger audience off pitch. And looking to embody the vibe of this burgeoning era, Nike has launched the new home shirt for the 21/22 season. Through both style and substance, Chelsea Football Club are evolving.

Following more in the wild footsteps of the 2019/20 home shirt design than the more understated 20/21 look, the Chelsea 21/22 home shirt introduces a bold aesthetic, inspired by the work of Bridget Riley, a founder of the Op Art movement, which was hugely influential in the style of West London and the Kings Road. It’s a movement that’s currently seeing a rebirth, much like this Chelsea side, who have been invigorated since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel. With the club long associated with fashion, style and culture, the new shirt looks to establish them as being at the forefront of the blend with football culture.

As well as the extravagant design that sees a zig zag effect switch into a chequered pattern as it moves across the shirt, presented in two tones of blue, and complemented by pops of yellow in the branding and down the side stripes, the shirt also boasts of Nike’s impressive sustainability drive, having been made from 100% recycled plastic bottles.

This jersey is the most eye-catching yet and is so unique from the others I’ve worn,” said Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount. “I think it’ll be a big hit with Blues across the globe. I feel like the kit really represents this younger generation rising up the ranks and I love the sustainability behind it.”
