If ever a shirt demanded a closer look for full appreciation of the intricacies of its design, then the Blackburn Rovers 22/23 away shirt from Macron is it. First glance? Bit of a bland navy design. But there’s so much more to this shirt…

Blackburn Rovers are a club steeped in history – one of only a handful to have a Premier League title to their name – and while they continue to try to find a route back to the top tier of English football, technical sponsor Macron are dressing them out appropriately for their quest. The latest addition to the Lancashire club’s wardrobe comes in the form of their new away shirt for 22/23, a navy design that could easily be overlooked. But this one begs for a closer inspection to fully appreciate what lies within.

That navy base features a traditional-style collar with light blue detailing, which also features in the cuffs and hem. All good so far. But it’s in the body of the shirt that the genius of the design is contained, with Rovers’ renowned club crest embossed repeatedly. Interestingly, it’s a feature that PUMA tried to use for the ill-fated third shirt template that was in use last season, but the key mistake that the German brand made was thinking that the embossed crest was enough to be able to do away with the actual crest. Here, Macron and Blackburn do it the right way.

OK, so the sponsor drags the overall design down a notch for us, but what’s new. And look, we’re not childish enough to even comment on "Watson Ramsbottom" as the back shirt sponsor…

Neither stop us applauding the invention and creativity of the shirt itself though. More of this please.

You can see the away shirt in action for the first time tonight when Jon Dahl Tomasson’s team play Dundee at the Kilmac Stadium this evening.
