Framed #242 | AC Milan v Inter Milan

‘Tis the season of derbies it seems, and following on from Barcelona coming up short against Real Madrid in El Clásico last week, this week it was over to Italy for the Derby della Madonnina. Always some fireworks to be had, both literal and figurative…

Few stadiums transform quite like San Siro on derby day. The same concrete giants that loom over Milan every week suddenly feel different. Heavier. Louder. Alive. Red and black on one side, blue and black on the other, separated only by colour but divided by generations of rivalry. Before a ball is even kicked, the spectacle has already begun. As if to add an extra layer, on Halloween night, the famous old stadium became a theatre of shadows and light.

Smoke drifted through the floodlights. Flags rolled endlessly across the Curva Sud. Every challenge carried extra weight, every touch seemed amplified by the noise cascading down from the stands. Ahead of kickoff, Inter were higher up the Serie A table than their rivals. But league standings sort of don’t matter in derby games – that’s the beauty of them.

Milan's victory would ultimately be recorded as a 3-1 win, but the scoreline only tells part of the story. The lasting images belonged elsewhere, and that's where Framed shines. The beauty of each shot not just telling the story of the match, but also capturing the emotion of the battle.

Across the ninety minutes, the noise never relented as the game unfolded through a sequence of captivating events.

A sea of raised scarves beneath the lights. Christian Pulisic disappearing beneath a swarm of teammates as the stadium erupted around him. Adrien Rabiot gliding through midfield with a calmness that contrasted the chaos unfolding around him. And then Diego Moreira, whose performance felt less like a football match and more like an exhibition, leaving his mark on the derby with moments of invention and imagination. Even when Inter pushed back, as they inevitably would, there was a constant feeling that the match existed on a knife edge.

And above it all stood San Siro itself. Ancient yet timeless. Brutalist and beautiful. A stage so perfect for this fixture. With the countdown on for derbies left in this beautiful venue, it’s important we lap up each remaining moment. When the final whistle arrived on this one, the Rossoneri had secured local bragging rights and handed their rivals a first league defeat of the campaign.

But the Derby della Madonnina has never really belonged to the statisticians. It belongs to the atmosphere and the moments suspended in time between one roar and the next.
