It’s a sad reality that not every team can make it to the World Cup, even with the expanded number of nations competing this year. And with that comes another disappointment: some truly beautiful shirt designs won’t get the chance to shine on the biggest stage in football. So we’ve rounded up the best of those that missed out, to give them their moment in the spotlight.
By the end of the tournament, there will likely be more great kits that never got their due. In fact, there are already 18 kits that won’t feature in the group stage, meaning that unless their nations qualify for the knockouts, they’ll remain unseen. But we’re not dealing in hypotheticals here, that’s a conversation for another day.
Right now, the focus is on the shirts that definitely won’t be worn across Mexico, the United States and Canada this summer. Ten designs, absent not because they lack quality, but because their teams didn’t qualify.
Italy, Costa Rica, Chile, Jamaica, Venezuela, Paraguay, Nigeria, Denmark, Poland, Iceland – all missing from the tournament, all carrying kits that deserved a bigger platform. The adidas away collection in particular has been outstanding this cycle: bold choices, rich cultural storytelling, genuine craft. Nigeria’s Nike away might just be the most daring shirt of the lot…and it won’t get a World Cup stage. Criminal.
ITALY HOME
Could've also included Italy away in this list. Two beautiful designs from adidas that will fade into relative obscurity. Still feels weird not having Italy at a World Cup, and damn if they wouldn't have looked good.
JAMAICA HOME
Another adidas nation where we could've gone with the home or away, as both are beauts. The Three Stripes are really finding their creative stride with the Reggae Boyz and Girlz, but the team couldn't quite get over the line for a World Cup appearance.
ICELAND AWAY
From the crest to that sublimated lightning strike (or crack in the ice?), the Iceland kit is a crisp execution that really hits. Shame it will remain frozen in ice.
PERU AWAY
Peru's away shirt is so unexpected in its clean presentation that it begs for appreciation. Simple black base allows those multi-coloured accents through the Three Stripe branding on the shoulders and the trefoil to pop. So good.
GEORGIA HOME
Macron know how to make good kit designs, and this is a perfect example – subtle with a classy edge to it. Sad that with its absence from the World Cup we're not only denied Macron's presence but we're also denied the pleasure of watching one of the best players on the planet right now, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, performing on the World Stage. Wronged on two counts.
DENMARK AWAY
Hummel and Denmark seemingly have a perfect understanding of each other, and that results in a consistent level of kit releases that are refined and elegant. This away kit, with its fine pinstripe design, is a perfect example of that. And while we're here, get better soon, Christian Eriksen.
