Under Armour's All-New Shadow Elite 4 Looks To Contend in the Speed Game

Under Armour have released the Shadow Elite 4, its most innovative boot to date, and it’s been built to rival some of the strongest speed boots on the market. But does it get in on the photo finish between the fastest in the game?

In a world where you can have a Nike Mercurial, an adidas F50, a PUMA Ultra, even a New Balance Furon, why are you picking an Under Armour Shadow Elite? Well, that’s the question that the American brand must face up to whenever they sit at the drawing board when starting the design process for a new boot. And honestly? It’s a tough question to answer. For the fourth iteration of the Shadow Elite, the answer comes in the tech that’s being used.

Under Armour have built the boot to be light weight, coming in at 214g. But the real talking point comes from the the woven carbon fibre plate. There's only one other boot on the market that offers a carbon fibre plater right now, and that's the PUMA Ultra. So that's a pretty huge point of difference to most other competitors right there.

Up top, Under Armour haven’t tried to reinvent speed boot uppers, instead focusing on keeping things streamlined and race-ready. It’s thin without feeling fragile, moulding around the foot quickly and staying out of the way when you’re on the ball. Touch is clean and predictable rather than padded or textured, which makes sense for a boot that’s clearly prioritising pace over playmaking flair. Lockdown ties everything together nicely, with the upper and soleplate working as one rather than feeling like separate pieces forced into a lightweight package.

On-pitch, the Shadow Elite 4 finally feels like a genuine part of the speed boot conversation rather than an interesting alternative. It doesn’t try to out-Mercurial a Mercurial or beat the F50 at its own game; instead, it leans into that carbon plate to offer a slightly different take on what fast feels like. There’s a sense of efficiency here, a boot that rewards powerful runners who want maximum return for every stride.

So does it make the photo finish? For the first time in this silo, you could argue yes. The Shadow Elite 4 isn’t suddenly going to dominate the elite game overnight, but it does something distinctive enough to justify choosing it over the more obvious names. If carbon-infused propulsion, low weight, and a no-nonsense speed setup appeal to you, this might just be the Under Armour boot that finally makes the decision a little easier.
