It’s one of those moments from football where everyone remembers where they were when it happened. It's etched into footballing folklore. Last minute, from a ridiculous distance, with a nation’s World Cup fate at his feet. Thankfully, those feet belonged to a Predator-equipped David Beckham. And the rest, as they say, is history.
To make you feel old, it’s been 25 years since that unforgettable free-kick against Greece on 6 October 2001. Quarter of a century. Ridiculous. But it’s one of the defining moments of both Beckham’s career and Predator history, the strike securing England’s place at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and cementing Beckham’s status as one of football’s ultimate clutch performers. Now, to mark the anniversary, adidas unveil the third-generation signature Predator boot, co-designed with Beckham himself.
As for the design, it obviously draws inspiration from the colourway Beckham laced up in on that unforgettable afternoon at Old Trafford. Would be weird if it was anything other really. So it arrives in a clean white and red execution, and the headline detail comes in the form of the Trefoil, appearing on a Predator boot for only the second time in the franchise's history. First introduced on Beckham's debut special-edition Predator release back in 2024, the iconic mark has quickly become a defining feature of his signature line, creating a seamless link between adidas Originals heritage and one of football's most legendary boot silos.
Built on adidas' latest Predator Elite FT L-Tech, the boot sees a premium leather forefoot delivering the soft touch and comfort synonymous with football's most beloved leather boots, while underneath sits all the lightweight innovation and technology expected from the contemporary Predator. Completing the look is the model's signature fold-over tongue, finished in rich red leather as a nod to the boot that famously helped write a chapter of football history 25 years ago.
The Trefoil influence runs throughout the design, extending beyond the headline branding. Both the lateral and medial Three Stripes are filled with repeated Trefoil detailing, adding a subtle premium touch that celebrates Beckham's enduring relationship with adidas. Elsewhere, personalised Beckham branding features on the lateral heel, while an embroidered Trefoil on the fold-over tongue further reinforces the fusion of performance football and adidas Originals style.
Sam Handy, General Manager, adidas Football, said: "Few moments in football history capture the spirit of Predator quite like David Beckham's free kick against Greece. It showcased the precision, confidence and control that have defined both Beckham's legacy and the Predator franchise for more than three decades. With this special edition release, we wanted to honour that moment through a design that combines authentic football heritage, premium craftsmanship and modern performance innovation."
It's a beautiful boot worthy of the quarter century mark. Would I wear these on the pitch? Not sure I could pull them off, but they'd look beautiful on my mantlepiece.
