Wales Bonner and adidas Originals are back together to conclude their trilogy of releases with an 80s-infused Autumn/Winter 2021 collection, entitled “Black Sunlight”, which once again draws on football shapes for the core pieces.

British fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner has already shown off a connection with the world of football through her previous release with adidas Originals, and the influence is once again there for all to see with the collaborative collection for AW21. In it, the designer turns her attention to the diasporic radical thinkers of the 80s, and the apparel and accessories within feature iconic adidas pieces refreshed through her inimitable lens – implementing popular 80s inspired cut lines and silhouettes on items including t-shirts, pants, trackpants, a tracksuit, an anorak, and a sunhat.

“Black Sunlight” illuminates a world of Caribbean Thought and Black British intellectualism, reflecting on the scholars, poets and artists from the Caribbean, India, and West Africa whose work and writings advanced postcolonial discourse in the UK and across the globe. While that may seem a little on the heavy side, what it gives us is a collection that’s chock full of familiar shapes and vintage vibes, all with a heavy dose of footballing nostalgia, beautifully weaved throughout. Yep, we’ll take that.
