Taking the next evolutionary step in the popular football documentary era, Netflix and La Liga have announced the production of a first-ever league-wide docu-series, following the stories and rivalries from all of the division’s clubs during the 2023/24 season.

Football documentaries have become a huge part of the football zeitgeist in recent years, with plenty of player-centric options lifting the veil from our favourite stars’ journeys through the game, and the likes of Amazon Prime’s All or Nothing series telling all on an individual team’s progress throughout a season. Now the next logical step appears to be on the way, with Netflix partnering with La Liga to document the whole of the 23/24 campaign.

For those of you that may be thinking, “surely that’s just watching the season…” the docu-series will be looking to tell the whole story, with the teaser trailer dramatically stating: "When the game ends, the story begins...

Currently in pre-production, the series will focus on the 2023/24 La Liga Competition, and will be launched worldwide on Netflix next year. Similar to Netflix’s growing slate of sports programming such as Formula 1: Drive to Survive, Break Point, and the PGA Tour’s recent Full Swing, the series will take an inside look at everything that happens in the Professional Football League behind the scenes and the more personal stories of one of the most followed leagues in the world.

"For La Liga, to be the star of Netflix's first sports series in Spain is a unique opportunity to take our football beyond the fans, to share with the world the excitement of the sport we love, and the chance for all our fans to see La Liga from a totally different angle," explained Óscar Mayo, Executive Director of La Liga.

"At Netflix, we have always been committed to bringing must watch series and films to our members around the world," added Álvaro Díaz, Director, Unscripted & Documentary Series (Spain). "We are very proud and excited to share this project with La Liga, which is an unprecedented opportunity to experience the excitement of one of the most exciting sporting competitions on the planet, first-hand.

Could we see something similar for the Premier League in the future? Feels somewhat inevitable...
