If there’s one person in the world of football who is guaranteed box office, it’s David Beckham, right? And with the current trend for documentaries about any and everything from the Beautiful Game, it’s streaming giants Netflix who’ve won the rights to produce a series about the former England captain.

David Beckham was catapulted into the limelight after he lobbed Neil Sullivan from the halfway line back in 1996, and you have to say that he’s been ridiculously comfortable there ever since. As a public figure it feels like his life has been fairly well documented already through the media’s unyielding pursuit of a story, but now we’re set to get a much better look at the man behind the icon thanks to a new documentary series from Netflix.

Rumours of a new Netflix documentary focusing on Beckham and family first started doing the rounds back in 2020, but now those rumours have been confirmed by the man himself on his Instagram channel, where he said: “I’m excited to confirm that I am partnering with Netflix on a documentary series about my life and career ... The series will feature unseen archive, untold stories as well as interviews with the people who have been a part of my journey. The series is directed and produced by Academy Award winners Fisher Stevens and John Battsek. Watch this space…

So, as detailed in this post it appears that the rumours of 2020 were a little off in that the documentary will actually focus on Beckham himself rather than the Beckham family, although indications are that they will feature in some capacity. Further to that the definitive multi-part series will go beyond the shine of stardom to explore Beckham’s humble working class beginnings in East London, and the drive and determination that led him to become one of the most recognisable and scrutinised athletes of all time.

It will feature a mixture of never-before-seen personal archive footage from the last forty years and interviews with David Beckham, his family and friends, and key figures who have been part of his journey both on and off the pitch.

The project is helmed by Academy Award-winner Fisher Stevens (PALMER, And We Go Green, The Cove) who serves as director and executive producer, along with Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning producer John Battsek (One Day in September, Searching for Sugar Man, Winter on Fire).
