Celebrating the brand’s 100 year anniversary, Hummel have revealed that they are relaunching the iconic Denmark away jersey worn during the 1986 World Cup, and the men’s national team will wear it for the Euro Qualifier against Northern Ireland on 16 June.

Making it to 100 years old is a pretty big achievement in pretty much all walks of life, and Danish sports brand hummel have done so this year. To commemorate the milestone they’re relaunching the iconic Denmark away shirt from the World Cup in 1986. It’s the first time that the away shirt has been reprinted, and as a celebration of hummel, the national team will wear the shirt for the European Championship qualifier against Northern Ireland on 16 June in the Parken stadium.

Talking of the decision to relaunch the shirt, hummel CEO, Allan Vad Nielsen said: ”The World Cup in Mexico made its mark in Danish football history in many ways, and although the eye-catching ’86 jersey divided opinion in its time, it’s since gained great recognition and won several international awards as one of the most iconic designs ever. That’s why we also think it is natural to pay tribute to it together with DBU as part of our 100-year celebration.”

The match against Northern Ireland marks the start of a major anniversary campaign from hummel, where the ’86 jersey will be distributed to several of hummel's professional sponsor clubs later this year.

The relaunched shirt faithfully replicates the original design, with the right half featuring thin red and white stripes, with a white sleeve, while that's opposed by a white left side with the stripes featuring on that sleeve. The only differences present are minimal (makes a great spot the difference game with the kids) and they are that the collar folds  in the opposite direction to the original (no idea why), and that the branding is text only, with the hummel logo being dropped.

DBU's Football Director Peter Møller is very excited that hummel and DBU can jointly kick-start the celebration of one of the most iconic national team jerseys in history. "We all love national team jerseys, because they show the pride of playing in the Danish national football team,” he explained. “The jersey from 1986 is very special and has been voted one of the best several times. That is why we are also incredibly happy that we can send our national team onto the field against Northern Ireland wearing the ’86 shirt and help bring memories to life for the Danish fans and at the same time mark our clothing sponsor's wonderful 100th anniversary.”

As part of the shirt launch, hummel and DBU are also bringing back the national team shorts from the World Cup in Mexico, along with the purple goalkeeper shirt and the iconic tracksuit from the final round as part of the new ’86 collection.
