Continuing the brand’s ongoing relationship with lightweight speed, adidas launch the X 99 Speedportal – a stripped back version of the boot constructed from leather that takes inspiration from the Three Stripes’ 99g legacy..

Adidas has a strong history with lightweight speed boots, and the pinnacle of that movement was probably the adizero 99g, which dropped back in 2015, two years after the first concept version of the boot was revealed. Smashing down the boundaries of innovation, the Three Stripes became the first brand to go sub-100g, and the rest is history. But like all good things in history, it’s nice to be reminded of these moments in time, and adidas revisit the concept once again for the X 99 Speedportal.

Of course, this is not the first homage to the original, arriving after the 2016 rerelease and 2019’s X 99.1. What we get here though is a stripped back version of the current-gen X Speedportal, albeit with a leather construction for added comfort and touch. Like X 99.1, this one is also a lot closer to 200g than it is to 99g, with adidas delivering a design that is wearable and durable, as well as, like any limited edition drop, collectable.

It arrives in a “Ftwr White/Solar Green” colourway, with the white as the base colour and the green playing out through the branding and soleplate. As with the past releases, the branding on the tongue is once again flipped in signature style.

It’s actually not the first time we’ve seen this boot, with the likes of Noa Lang and Xavi Simons both spotted training in them as far back as January. Expect to see select athletes lacing up in these in the next few weeks.
