When people talk about the best football shirts of the year, the conversation usually drifts towards the big hitters. The Premier League. La Liga. The Champions League elite. But every now and then a design arrives from further down the footballing ladder that reminds us exactly why kit culture exists in the first place. The new US Endoume 2026/27 home shirt from Kappa is one of those shirts.
Fresh off the back of the club's centenary celebrations in 2025, Kappa has continued its partnership with the Marseille-based side by delivering a jersey that feels deeply rooted in local identity. It's the sort of shirt that rewards a closer look, packed with storytelling and detail rather than relying on flashy graphics or trend-driven aesthetics.
At first glance, the shirt catches the eye through its striking red-and-black striped base. But it's when you dig into those red stripes that the real magic reveals itself. Incorporated into the design are intricate details inspired by the nave and choir of the iconic Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica, one of Marseille's most recognisable landmarks.
Known locally as "La Bonne Mère" or "The Good Mother", Notre-Dame de la Garde sits at the very heart of the club's identity.
"The Good Mother is the emblem of our neighbourhood, our club and of course our city," explained Julien Pacull, US Endoume's Head of Marketing and Communications. "It overlooks Endoume and the hill adjacent to our famous football field. It protects all the Marseillais. This is the reason why we decided to highlight it on our new coat of arms, on our new jersey, and at the heart of our communication as the identity symbol of our club.”
That connection is visible throughout the shirt. The tonal detailing woven into each stripe creates a rich visual texture, while subtle maritime and architectural motifs add layers of meaning without overwhelming the design. It's a clever approach that gives the shirt character while maintaining a classic aesthetic.
The retro influence continues elsewhere. The iconic Kappa Banda taping travels down the shoulders in a starkly contrasting white. It's undoubtedly a mark of quality in today's jersey space. Perhaps the most eye-catching feature, however, is the club's crest.
At a time when football continues to lean heavily into simplified and stripped-back branding, US Endoume has boldly gone in the opposite direction. Positioned proudly on the chest, the newly introduced badge embraces a maximalist aesthetic that feels refreshingly different in today's football landscape.
"This is a strong and assumed message from the club at the time of hyper minimalist logos," said Pacull. "This new coat of arms proudly assumes its maximalism and retro style in tribute to the legacy of the club and the city.”
Looking at the shirt hanging against the backdrop of Marseille's narrow streets and terracotta rooftops, it's hard to imagine a more fitting representation of the community it belongs to. The red-and-black palette feels timeless, the detailing is purposeful, and every element serves its purpose beautifully. Ultimately, that's what makes this shirt so good.
It's not trying to chase trends, appeal to a global market, or create social media buzz for the sake of it. Instead, Kappa and US Endoume have produced a jersey that celebrates place, heritage and identity. In doing so, they've created another reminder that some of football's finest designs aren't always found on the sport's biggest stages.
Sometimes, you just have to dig a little deeper.
