Big news has dropped from the Big Cat camp today with the announcement that Man City captain Vincent Kompany has signed with PUMA on a long term deal. Kompany will lace up however he chooses in the ‘Stun Pack’ Future Netfit from this weekend on.
Kompany becomes PUMA’s latest acquisition in what has been an impressive recruitment drive of late that has seen City team mate David Silva join along with Dejan Lovren, Romelu Lukaku and Luis Suarez. And it doesn’t seem like it’s stopping there either, with Virgil Van Dijk and Serg Gnabry both being spotted training in what’s believed to be next-gen PUMA boots recently.
This move doesn’t come as a massive surprise, with Kompany having been seen wearing the PUMA Future in training as far back as October, and then again more recently since the beginning of December. What does come as a surprise though is his move away from leather. We had him down to wear a leather version of the ONE series.
By his own admission, the big Belgian has always been a leather boot man, and for the last couple of years he’s been wearing the adidas ACE 16.1 despite not being contracted to the Three Stripes. He even openly criticised adidas in August 2017 for discontinuing what he referred to as “a great defender’s boot”.
Kompany and Silva join lead asset Sergio Aguero at City, and with the club themselves announcing their switch from Nike in 2019, this could be the start of a dominant era at the Etihad for PUMA. Don't rule out the brand luring in a few more star names from the City first team in the coming months.
