Celebrating the club’s 15th anniversary, Philadelphia Union have unveiled their new primary jersey from adidas for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, and it sees the return of the iconic centre stripe in a dynamic execution.
15 years ago, Philadelphia Union took to the field in their inaugural season in a kit that featured a central stripe. Now, ahead of the 2024 MLS season, The Union reveal their new primary shirt design from adidas for the 2024 and 25 campaigns, and for the first time since 2017 and in celebration of their 15th anniversary, it once again features a centrally positioned stripe. That stripe has been given a fitting flex as well, in the form of a graphic execution that sees gold and blue diamonds repeating, with the negative space down the stripe creating “X’s” and “V’s”, the roman numerals for 15. The jersey pays homage to the club’s beginnings and evolution while looking forward to what the future holds.
The ‘XV’ kit was once again created in collaboration with the Union Creative Collective (UCC), which was founded in 2019. Consisting of season ticket holders, Sons of Ben members, Union super fans, members of the media, and Union employees, the organisation worked with the Union and adidas to create a modernised, unique take on the centre stripe for the 2024 “XV” kit.
The group chose to add the Union’s signal blue colour to the stripe for this variation to symbolise the ongoing evolution and growth of both the team and league over the last 15 seasons. The shapes that create the central design mimic the Union’s typical on-field formation and the kinetic jagged band could be interpreted as snake, river, or lightning bolt, all symbols that have been part of the Union’s branding and story.
“Union fans have been awaiting the return of the center stripe for many years,” said Shaun Kreider, Philadelphia Union Senior Creative Director. “With 2024 being the club’s landmark 15th season, we felt it only right to revisit the classic design, but with a modern twist. Originally inspired by the trusses of the Commodore Barry bridge that serves as a backdrop to Subaru Park, the XV jersey symbolizes a bridge from the past to the present and the Union’s commitment to bridging the gap between fans and their team with countless initiatives like the Union Creative Collective, who’s input brought this kit to life.”
