In what was a landmark occasion for women’s football, Boca Juniors hammered Lanus 5-0 in a game that was played in La Bombonera, marking the first time an official women’s tournament match was played in the legendary stadium.

Coming a day after International Women’s Day, the match was highly anticipated and it did not disappoint. With some of the male players watching on Boca tore into the opposition, revelling in the occasion. Women’s soccer in Argentina is still played by amateur athletes who get little to no money, but that didn’t stop the Boca women as they romped to a 5-0 victory in the historic match.

As the anticipation continues to build up towards what is expected to be one of the biggest Women’s World Cups in history, the attention on the female game continues to increase. Tickets for the World Cup final, which Argentina have also qualified for, reportedly sold out in just over 30 minutes.

Boca, who are sponsored by Nike, came into the game accompanied by the tag 'Parece loco hasta que lo haces' which translates as 'It seems crazy until you do it', tying in with Nike's recent 'Dream Crazier' initiative. The initiative shines a spotlight on female athletes who have broken barriers, brought people together through their performance and inspired generations of athletes to chase after their dreams.

Nike have not been slow to throw their support at the women’s game and the impending tournament either, hosting an epic innovation event in Paris in which they unveiled the kits of all the 14 competing Nike national teams. Early reports also suggest that Sam Kerr is set to be named as the face of Nike Australia, ahead of the likes of NBA all-star Ben Simmons, golfer Jason Day and English Premier League players Aaron Mooy and Mat Ryan, as Nike’s commitment to female athletes moves on at pace.
